Case Study

Queens Park Rangers FC

The Problem

As part of ongoing improvements at Loftus Road stadium, the QPR management team identified a number of staircases as a potential slip risk and, as such, a hazard that needed addressing. Two of the staircases at the stadium were largely external and on matchdays were used by over 1,000 people using as access and egress into the stands. This was deemed high risk, particularly in poor weather.

The Solution

These steps had existed from the original build of the stadium, and had repeatedly been painted year on year, resulting in the profile of the step now forming a smooth surface and therefore presenting a potential slip hazard, especially in wet weather conditions.

Ever mindful of their Health & Safety obligations, Joshua Scott, QPR’s Facilities Manager, took immediate action and called on the services of Thermagrip.

The Thermagrip product is not an anti-slip paint, (which has a very limited lifespan), but a far superior own formula thermoplastic which is incredibly durable and has an aesthetically pleasing finish, whilst at the same time conforming to all DDA regulations and Stadium Safety “Green Book” recommendations.

To facilitate a busy game schedule, the contract was split into two phases, each phase being completed within one working day, and due to the fact that treated surfaces are ready to be reused within approx. 30 -40 minutes (no waiting hours for paint to dry/cure) the total installation was completed with minimum downtime and disturbance to the QPR’s normal routine.

In this instance, QPR chose the full step anti-slip coverage in a dark grey with a contrasting DDA compliant white step edge, and on chosen landing areas the new QPR logo was incorporated within the matrix of the anti-slip surface, creating a safe, interesting, and aesthetically pleasing outcome.

A year down the line from the initial installation, Mr Scott reports that he has had no slip related incidents, with management and numerous fans commenting on the overall improved appearance. Thermagrip are looking to install the Thermagrip product in other areas of the stadium.
